St. Louis Cemetery #1

St. Louis Cemetery #1 in New Orleans

St. Louis #1 is #1 for a reason; not only is it one of the most iconic cemeteries for New Orleans tourists, but the oldest, established in 1789. One block north of the French Quarter, New Orleans writer Grace King described it as “confused and closely packed” as the cemetery follows no discernible pattern, probably due to the fact that it was filled rapidly during one of the city’s many yellow fever epidemics.

“…beyond the ancient necropolis, pay attention to the devotions left behind by an attentive public…”
